Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Taurean Clark

Dr. Taurean Clark’s journey is one rooted in service, leadership, and a commitment to helping others grow. A U.S. Navy veteran, federal acquisition professional, educator, and leadership practitioner, Dr. Clark served eight years in the Navy as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling).

His military service included time aboard the USS Carl Vinson, deployments supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, and humanitarian operations in Haiti. Today, he continues that commitment to service as a senior leader within the Department of Defense while also teaching as an adjunct faculty member.

Dr. Clark first learned about City University of Seattle while attending National University as a Sanford Scholarship recipient. Several National University faculty members and leaders had completed CityU’s Doctor of Education in Leadership program and shared their experiences with him. Their recommendations encouraged him to explore CityU and ultimately pursue his own doctoral journey.

In December 2025, Dr. Clark completed his Doctor of Education in Leadership at CityU. He credits the program with challenging him to think more deeply about leadership, organizational change, and the influence leaders can have on the people and communities they serve. His connection to CityU did not end at graduation. He has since returned as an adjunct faculty member, bringing his professional, military, and academic experience into the classroom to help educate and mentor the next generation of leaders.

Dr. Clark has also remained engaged with the CityU community through the Military & Allies Network. On October 29, 2026, he will be featured in the Network’s virtual fireside chat, “Leadership Doesn’t End When Military Service Ends,” hosted by Marco Ohler. During the conversation, Dr. Clark will share insights from his journey from U.S. Navy Seaman to doctoral scholar and senior leader, including lessons on transitioning from military to civilian leadership, pursuing advanced education while building a career, leading with purpose and service, and mentoring others. His story reflects the kind of lifelong connection CityU hopes to build with its graduates. For Dr. Clark, CityU became more than the place where he earned his doctorate. It became part of an ongoing journey of service, leadership, education, and giving back.
