The Master of Education Reading Instruction will prepare graduates to integrate the conceptual framework for reading instruction focused upon the five essential components of reading, as well as Scarborough’s Reading Rope (2001) and the Simple View of Reading. The major required courses incorporate the International Dyslexia Associations Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS). These standards will be addressed over a cumulative scope and sequence. The degree will prepare candidates to pass the Knowledge and Practice Examination for Effective Reading Instruction (KPEERI).
Required literacy courses cover the following KPS Standards:

  • Standard 1: Foundations of Literacy Acquisition
  • Standard 2: Knowledge of Diverse Reading Profiles, Including Dyslexia
  • Standard 3: Assessment
  • Standard 4: Structured Literacy Instruction (Essential principals, phonological awareness and phonemic awareness, phonics and word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension, written expression)
  • Standard 5: Professional Dispositions and Practices

Teacher Certification Programs at City University of Seattle provide relevant, relationship-based learning experiences rooted in culturally sustaining and identity affirming practices for future PK-12 teachers. We equip future teachers with tools, strategies, and awareness to effectively and equitably facilitate humanizing, healing-centered, and high-quality learning experiences for PK-12 students in the school setting.

Program Outcomes

The Master of Education in Reading Instruction will prepare students to:

  1. Interpret educational theories and scholarship to inform best practices in education and create engaging learning environments supporting the diverse needs of students.
  2. Utilize quantitative reasoning skills to analyze data to inform instruction and assessment that support evidence-based decisions in diverse settings.
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to the ethical and professional dimensions of teaching through culturally responsive practices.
  4. Integrate personal and professional development to navigate the complexities within educational settings.
  5. Interpret and apply critical thinking pedagogy through reflective practice.
