Updates in the TESOL Certificate Program

Summer is coming to a close for most of us, but this year at Washington Academy of Languages (WAL), the season has been more memorable than usual.  In July, WAL launched its first Summer TESOL Intensive where seven students participated in five weeks of training.  These hard-working students achieved their goals in a very short amount of time and received their graduate level TESOL Certificate in a little over a month. The schedule was indeed intense, but according to the students, they were able to learn a great deal in a short period of time and apply a number of the strategies they either saw in class or read about. In five weeks, they became acquainted with second language acquisition theories, studied various popular language teaching methods, learned how to create lesson plans and teach grammar, and developed materials for their own unit plans.

Now, certificate in hand, our TESOL graduates are on their way to other adventures.  Whether they will be teaching locally in Seattle, starting their own school in Taiwan, or going abroad to teach in a new and unknown country, they are all prepared for the journey.

If you’re considering getting a TESOL Certificate and would prefer in-class instruction over purely online, the Summer TESOL Intensive may be a good fit for you.  But if the intensity scares you a bit, CityU also offers its new mixed-mode program starting in January.

The mixed mode model is an attractive alternative route for full-time employees who don’t have the option of taking five weeks off. Students meet for four consecutive Saturdays and have 10 hours of online work per class. It only takes two and a half quarters to complete the TESOL certificate.
